My friends daughter can’t go to sleep at a reasonable hour. She goes to sleep as 1:00 or 2:00 am. the girl has no sleeping disorders and says that she just can’t go to sleep. She is having trouble sleeping and my friend gets frustrated. They have tried reading, watching a movie, drinking warm milk, and just leaving the girl in the dark laying in here bed, but nothing works. What should she do?

She might need to be taken to a sleep clinic to see for sure if she has some kind of sleeping disorder. Or, you might just want to take her to her pediatrician and have him talk to her. She might be suffering from anxiety or depression, both of which can affect your sleep patterns. Maybe some blood work may be in order to rule out any underlying conditions that could be affecting her sleep so drastically. Her room may be too cold or too warm or if she’s considerably overweight, she might not be able to get comfortable. Either way, this is definitely a situation that needs further investigation. Sleep is very important, and it has to be affecting her negatively to be getting so little sleep at her age. How are her grades, and what is her performance at school like?

First I would make sure that she is getting up early (5:30am) and not taking any naps. Then you want to make sure that she gets a lot of activities in a day. Like outdoor type activities. Get her outside, involved in some type of activity or sport. Go for a walk with her in the evening before bed for some fresh air. I always take my kids outside and kick the ball around before dinner. Wears them right out. If trying to wear her out like this does nothing and if regulating the hours at which she sleep does nothing then you need to bring her to see a doctor and get her set up with a sleep clinic. They will monitor her sleeping habits and be able to better identify if she does indeed have some sort of problem.

Well, if it’s taking her a specific amount of time to be able to fall asleep, then they should start “bed time” at around 7:30-8pm.
Another thing is, is she eating a lot of sweets or drinking a lot of soda?
If so, the new rule should be no caffeine or anything with a high amount of sugar after lunch time.
If she’s having trouble winding down a bath or shower before bedtime might help.
Another thing is, she may want to try a completely natural sleep aid like Melatonin. http://walgreens.naturemade.com/ProductD…
    Hope this helps.

more physical activity. After you work your bottom off all day then come home and are outside or working you get really tired. I know that if I do not expire so much energy throughout a day I cannot sleep either, so I would make sure to walk at night or something. If she still cannot sleep after increasing her physical activity then I would ask the doctor if she can take like Tylenol PM or something to get her on a sleep schedule.

MAKE her get up at a reasonable hour. Start at the goal and work backwards.
MAKE her get up at 5:30 am everyday. Even weekends.
By 7pm the third day that child will be ready for bed and bouncing out of bed at 6:00 am EASILY.

She might have a sleeping disorder. I know you said she doesn’t but it could still be possible. She needs to be taken to a doctor to figure it out more than likely.

Reward her at the end of the week if she goes to bed everyday.

Take her to a sleep clinic.
